Allegations of misconduct by agent Drew Rosenhaus have been levied by Redskins wide receiver Desean Jackson. Jackson, who has been ordered to repay a sum in excess of $500,000 to Rosenhaus, claims the money was not a loan (as Rosenhaus has stated) but a bribe to Jackson for employment. Now Jackson has filed a lawsuit to relieve him of the burden of payment on the grounds of corruption within the players' union.
Jacksons attorney, William Quinn, implies that Rosenhaus was capable of swaying the decision regarding his client's claim, forcing Jackson to seek legal intervention (via Bleacher Report):
"'The NFLPA's unwillingness to enforce its own regulations to protect its players - at least as to certain agents - is perhaps nowhere more evident than in the case of Drew Rosenhaus,'
"'There is abundant credible evidence that Rosenhaus exercises extraordinary and undue influence over the key NFLPA decision-makers. The evidence includes widely publicized and well substantiated fact that Rosenhaus, although frequently the target of credible allegations of blatant violations of NFLPA regulations, has never been sanctioned or even seriously investigated by the NFLPA.'"
If Jackson's claims are true, and Rosenhaus bribed him, then he is legally allowed to keep that money (Philly.com):
"In the docs, DeSean says he shouldn't have to pay Drew a dime because a huge chunk of the cash was given to him to induce DeSean to use D.R. in his next contract negotiation.
"Why is that a big deal? Because according to DeSean, it's a huge violation of NFLPA rules -- for which the NFLPA punishment is that DeSean wouldn't have to repay a single cent."
With allegations of corruption within the ranks of the NFLPA how are they going to have the credibility to address crucial issues like racism and drug policy inequity within the league?
