Vernon Davis is playing coy in the press about his absence from San Francisco's OTA's this month. His decision to skip the non-mandatory is being perceived as a negotiation tactic for a possible new contract, but the tight end maintains that he intends to play with the 49ers. He is just exploring his options with his agent. The possible holdout and internet rumors suggest that Davis might end up sitting out of San Francisco minicamp as well, which would result in a fine by the team.
The 6'3" 250 pound tight end has already foregone his $20,000 workout bonus in order to concentrate on his brand. Now he's indicating that, while he intends to go to SF's mandatory minicamp this month, he hasn't made up his mind yet (via NFL.com):
"'I'm not sure at the moment,' Davis told ESPN on Wednesday when asked if he'd join his teammates later this month. 'I have to get with my agent and talk to him about that. We're just taking our time with this whole thing. We're still talking and just trying to come up with the best plan that we can go in and get things done.'"
While he seems confident that he is taking the right course of action for himself and his career, Davis also claims to have team loyalty (via ESPN):
"'I bleed red and gold. I'm all about the 49ers. I love the 49ers,' said on ESPN's 'SportsCenter' earlier Thursday. 'My dream is to retire as a San Francisco 49er. OTAs aren't mandatory, so I don't have to be there technically. I just decided not to go. I decided not to be there ... Everyone was just assuming I wanted a new contract. I just take it one day at a time. If they offer me a new contract, I'll gladly take it. I'll accept it.'"
Talk about mixed messages. Davis has a bright future ahead of him no matter what he wants to do. He is intelligent, able to manipulate the conversation, and seemingly endorse paradoxical viewpoints. He could very well be the governor of California in ten years' time!
So with no indication as to Davis' intentions we'll just have to wait and see if he shows up June 17.
