Last year the Golf Channel began using drones to expand their coverage. The controversial use of these machines has led to some amazing aerial shots, as well as some resentment. There was no resentment, however, at a charity golf tournament this week. Nickelodeon star Kendall Schmidt of Big Time Rush took to the golf course to help raise money for former Secret Service Agents. The tournament, held at Trump National Golf Club, was a fundraiser for ex-agents and their families. And yes, the drones were there.
Kendall Schmidt donated $2,500 to the cause and sponsored the first tee. As well as the cameras on the ground, there was also a drone in the sky taking video (via TMZ):
"TMZ Sports has obtained footage showing a fast-moving flying object hovering over the event -- where stars like Kendall Schmidt -- the lead singer from 'Big Time Rush' who joined current and past agents on the links at Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes.
"As for the U.F.O. ... our sources on the course tell us the drone hovered over the area throughout the day, zipping around the sky. Unclear if was it was keeping watch over the agents ... or just recording the action for fun."
There has been some resentment amongst golfers who feel the drones' loud engines are distracting. Golfer Keegan Bradley got a chance to take out his frustrations on one of them. The promo video of Bradley whacking one out of the sky is extremely satisfying (via Mashable):
"The DJI Phantom drone was equipped with a GoPro, so we get firsthand footage of the quadcopter crashing into the ground.
"And while the entire encounter seems somewhat (read: completely) staged by Putnam Investments, you can't deny Bradley's got aim - and, apparently, a distaste for drones."
