Detroit Lions receiver Golden Tate is doing his best to shake off the rumors that he caused the split between former teammate Russell Wilson and his wife by cheating with her. Now he's putting his nose in Ray Rice's business. But is he really defending the Ravens running back, who allegedly assaulted his wife in February?
Tate offered his thoughts on the discrepancy between the NFL's strict Drug Policy versus their stance on conduct issues. In his eyes, apparently, off-the-field drama is nobody's business as long as it doesn't affect the way the game is played (via CBS Sports):
"'Honestly, assault towards anyone is - really doesn't affect this game,' Detroit Lions wide receiver Golden Tate said. 'It's not affecting how I play on the field. I think drugs have a direct correlation on how you perform and if you have an advantage or disadvantage on the field.
"'What you do outside of football is your business,' Tate added. 'Now I don't agree with assault or any of those other illegal actions, but it is what it is. That's not football-related.'"
That's an interesting opinion. But what about the role professional sports play in shaping culture, particularly amongst young fans? Is Tate saying that kids should learn that it's alright to beat on your wife as long as you don't take steroids while you do it?
The Rice family, meanwhile, are desperately trying to show the world that they are a happy, healthy couple (via TMZ):
"Janay -- who previously apologized for her role in allegedly getting K.O.'d in an Atlantic City casino -- included the message, 'We gon [sic] show the world the definition of real #therices #usagainsttheworld.'
"Of course, Ray & Janay were arrested back in February after an alleged physical altercation at the Revel casino ... and cameras captured Ray dragging Janay's unconscious body out of an elevator."
What do you think? Are Tate's comments out of line? Do Ray and Janay honestly think they're fooling anyone?
