NBC Crossbones TV show Blackbeard, John Malkovich, played the role of real life hero last year in Canada, when he help saved a dying man's life on the streets of Toronto. The marvel thespeian was outside having a smoke last June 8, when he was alerted by the screams of Jim Walpole's wife. It seems Jim had accidently slit his own throat in a fall, bringing the Being John Malkovich lead to the rescue. It is less apparent if John is going to be able to rescue the network's pirate series with his presence alone. The show's premiere was already delayed once, because producers felt that Hannibal's Season 2 would bring more of a draw, which it didn't. Though Crossbones did just as well as Hannibals' much improved second year 2014 ratings, the swashbuckling fantasy failed to perform as well as Showtime Tutors' royalty Jonathan Rhys Meyers' recently cancelled epic fail Dracula, which premiered in the same time slot back in last October.
Think what you want about John Malkovich's portrayal of famous pirate Edward Teach better known as Blackbeard in NBC's new 2104 summer offering Crossbones, the man is a real life hero.
Last year while taking a cigarette break outside the Elgin Theatre in Toronto, where he was performing in The Giacomo Variations, John Malkovich tore his own scarf off to apply pressure to Jim Walpole's throat, after the 77-year-old Ohio native was injured on a piece of scaffolding during an accidental fall.
The overly verbose Midwestern retirees couldn't help but go on and on in the Toronto Sun about how much he appreciated what Malkovich had done for him:
"[Malkovich] started to press on my neck. He said he was trying to stop the bleeding."
Thank god, Jim was able to pull through, but it doesn't seem as clear whether or not Malkovich is going to be able to save his new NBC series Crossbones with his talent and charisma alone.
According to Deadline's report Crossbones debut premiere fared better than some, but not as well as some that have already didn't make it:
From a numbers POV, the Blackbeard re-telling debuted with exactly the same ratings as the Season 2 premiere of Hannibal did back on February 28 in the 10 PM slot.
In fact, last night's result was the best NBC has done in the slot since the debut of Hannibal's latest cycle and saw a 38% rise from Hannibal's Season 2 ender last week.
"Crossbones' start was however down from the now cancelled Dracula which opened in the same slot on NBC on October 25 last year with a 1.8 rating among Adults 18-49."
What do you think? Will Crossroads booty chest fest continue to rule Sunday evening rating high seas? Or should NBC go ahead and make the series walk the plank?
