It is Friday night and the means we are one week closer to the premiere of the DC Comics Hellblazer show Constantine. The show will be joining Grimm this fall on NBC. Recently Matt Ryan opened up about playing the iconic Master of the Dark Arts. Constantine is also a member of the Justice League Dark. Hellboy’s Guillermo del Toro has been working on adapting the comic team to the big screen for some time. The director spoke about how he plans to fit the TV series into his big picture.
Constantine is almost here! The show’s star Matt Ryan recently opened up to IGN about the new series:
“I think as with the source material, there's so much to draw from in terms of the character and the balance of humor and wit and dark and gritty. It's great, because John has this kind of real sarcastic, ironic British wit. It's funny, but at the same time it's serious and dark and gritty. It's got it all, I think.”
Ryan also spoke about joining DC Comics ever growing lineup of TV shows:
“I think it's the new golden age of comic books, isn't it? It's great to see DC having so many shows on the air as well. It's just a fantastic opportunity for NBC, I think, on a Friday night, to have this genre. We follow Grimm, and I think that that's a fantastic thing for fans of this genre. They can really get a kick out of that.”
John Constantine is one member of the Justice League Dark. Hellboy and Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro has been attached to adapt the comic to film for sometime now.
Recently, del opened at Festival di Roma about the how the movie will tie-into the show and the greater DCU:
“I’ve been a fan of John Constantine since he was first introduced in 1985. This Constantine, envisioned by Neil Marshall and embodied by Matt Ryan, looks like he sprang directly from the comics’ covers.”
"Warner Bros. are making plans for the entire DC Universe, all the superheroes, all the mythologies, and part of that is Justice League Dark. They're planning on TV, movies, all the media, so we have to fit within that plan."
Del Toro also spoke about the lineup of Dark League and Constantine’s involvement last year at WonderCon:
"[John Constantine] is basically trying to recruit these guys," del Toro said. "On Etrigan, I'm using Jason Blood in the time of Merlin. We find out at the top that they each have a mystery to solve. Swamp Thing is at peace with who he is, but Deadman needs to figure out who shot him. It's all woven in. Growing up, my two favorite characters were Etrigan and Swamp Thing, so I'm in heaven."
