No news is good news for controversial boxer Adrien Broner. After a hot streak of negative media attention, Broner is seemingly retiring from the spotlight following his suspension due to allegations of racist comments against Mexicans as well as his attempt to give charitably to a homeless man who was then beaten and robbed.
Somebody must have kidnapped boxer Adrien Broner because he hasn't been in the news for over a week. The controversial boxer has made a habit of making headlines with such antics as porn tapes, flushing money down the toilet or bashing Mexicans wih racially charged speeches. Recently he gave a homeless guy $1000 which was widely praised as a humanitarian gesture, but any goodwill that might have engendered was flushed down the toilet (like so many $20 bills) after the same guy was found beaten and robbed days later.
Maybe in light of all this bad press Broner has decided to hibernate. Good for him. By many personal accounts Broner is actually a sweet guy who just has the disease of being young and cocky. He has perhaps been overzealous in cultivating an over-the-top public persona. Former associate Oscar de la Hoya expressed optimism in Broner's potential to overcome his negative image recently (via Tha Boxing Voice):
"I still believe in him... Here's a kid I took to Iraq for 3 weeks with Seth Mitchell, with Danny Jacobs, we all went to Iraq, we're having a good time, we're there for 3 weeks and he's so charismatic with the troops, and so nice. I'm saying to myself, 'you know what, I'm thinking Sugar Ray Leonard', speed, power, charisma. Not as good looking as Sugar Ray Leonard, but you know what I mean. But then he comes back and he changes. I don't know, I don't know, but is he talented? Yes he is."
Here's hoping Broner has a good heart underneath all that baggage and that the believers are right about him.
