Phil Jackson Fined $25,000 For Tampering With Derek Fischer, Knicks Coaching Job Uncertain, Retirement Speculation

Knicks President Phil Jackson is being fined by the NBA for tampering with the Oklahoma Thunder's Derek Fischer. Jackson made it known he was interested in pursuing Fischer for the vacant Knicks head coaching position. As Fischer has hinted he would likely retire at the end of season, he would make a great candidate. However, as he is still under contract with the Thunder until June 30, the NBA says such speculation is not okay. So for now the future of the Knicks job is still uncertain.

While Fischer has a long history with Jackson, and a knowledge of the Triangle offense of which Jackson is fond. But while Fischer may be interested, there are many factors that will weigh on any such decisions (via New York Daily News):

"'There's for sure huge layers added to (the decision),' Fisher said on Sunday. 'The personal relationship and professional relationship that I've had with Phil Jackson over the years, and being in the position that he's in.'"

This situation began after Steve Kerr turned down the job. Jackson then stated that, among others, Fischer would make a great coach for the Knicks (via New York Post):

" I have no idea if he wants to move his family and come here. There's so many unknowns. He's definitely a person on my list who could be a very good candidate for this job."

It's not clear if the league was acting on its own volition or under pressure from Oklahoma City (via New York Post):

"Sources said Thunder officials were ticked off Jackson referred to Fisher as being on his list of coaching candidates while speaking with the media last Friday while Fisher was still in the midst of the Western finals against the Spurs."

What do you think? Should Jackson have not said anything about Fischer to the press while he was still in the playoffs?
