The show is executive produced by Jennifer Lopez and stars Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place alum Jake T. Austin.
This past Sunday the seventh annual Television Academy Honors ceremony was held. The event celebrates TV show that usher awareness towards important social issues. Among those awarded was Two and A Half Men creator Chuck Lorre. Lorre redeemed the raunchy comedies misdeeds with his new show Mom.
Variety spoke with Chuck Lorre about the award who said:
“To do a show about people trying to redeem their lives and to salvage and repair the damage they’ve done, for me, it’s an opportunity to apologize for ‘Two and a Half Men.’”
Lorre also spoke about sifting through show’s dark themes of alcohol abuse in order to find the humor:
“It’s a dark area. It destroys lives, it destroys families, and if you’re as cavalier about it, that’s not right, but if you can’t laugh at it maybe that’s not exactly right either. Somewhere in the middle there is a balance between the two. There is comedy to be had, it just takes a little time to find it.”
ABC Family’s The Fosters was also recognized. Co-creator Peter Paige told reporters about the honor:
“I know first hand the value of seeing yourself reflected in the media. We are a society obsessed with our own reflection and our reflection is not a mirror--it’s that plasma on the wall in our living rooms and when you don’t see yourself there you feel invisible.”
