The Spurs of San Antonio are a veteran team with wisdom, experience and patience. But they are flesh and blood. One of the most consistently winning teams of the last 20 years they seem to make it to the Western Conference Finals almost every year. With 4 NBA Titles under their belt there is a lot to be proud of. But veteran Tim Duncan and his Spurs are hungry for more. Facing the Heat in the Finals for the second year in a row makes for some great drama. This week the rematch of the Decade will take place, and two basketball teams will decide whose Dynasty shall add another brick to its foundation.
While the media focus is on the Heat's prospective three consecutive title wins, San Antonio is one of the best teams in the history of the NBA. Since 1995 they have made it to the Western Conference Finals 10 times, and they have won 4 NBA Titles. But they still have to scrap and claw to get every accolade they get (via Wall Street Journal):
"'The San Antonio Spurs are angry, they have played perfect basketball at times this season and, unlike last year, San Antonio has home-court advantage,' writes the Miami Herald's Joseph Goodman. 'Oh, and did we mention the Spurs are angry.'
"'At least we know the Finals, at least from the outset, aren't build on a fluke of a foundation,' writes Sports on Earth's Shaun Powell. 'The two best teams are here, which tends to happen in the NBA, and for the most part they are intact.'"
Like a Hollywood movie or an old fable, two giants will face each other for supremacy. Only there is no clear cut hero and villain. Oh, people have their favorites, for sure. But the two most opposite teams with the two most opposite styles are about to find out who wins, the flashy, star-studded Heat? Or the hard-nosed selfless Spurs?
Duncan has a chip on his shoulder because he feels the Spurs were written off last year (via ESPN):
"'People keep talking like we weren't close to winning, but we were ready to win last year. We're happy it's the Heat again. We've got that bad taste in our mouths still.'"
