After Hangover Controversial Addict Mike Tyson Mourns Maya Angelou Death, Comments on Sobriety

Say the words Mike Tyson and there's no telling what you will hear in response. Despite a memorable career in boxing, it was cut short due to a memorable string of controversial incidents too numerous to mention. Odds are you know 'em by heart anyway. The controversial public figure, recovering addict and Hangover co-star recently discussed the loss of revered poet Maya Angelou. While he mourned her death the former World Heavyweight Champ has also commented recently on his ongoing business affairs and his sobriety.

Tyson and Angelou were acquaintances but both have alluded to being profoundly touched by the other. If ever there were an odder pairing than those two; upon her passing, Tyson made some touching remarks (via TMZ):

"I had the pleasure to meet Ms. Angelou on a few occasions and each time was very enlightening. I was intrigued and would ask her about the greats from her era such as Billie Holiday, Malcolm X and Fats Waller. These people were just book novels, interesting reading to me but real people to her.

"I'm just very grateful for the times I shared with this phenomenal woman, even though they were brief."

Several weeks ago Tyson spoke with New York Daily News about his new boxing promotion venture. He was also forthcoming about his sobriety:

"'Hey, I've been, yes I am (sober), and I've been that way since my last discussion about it,' Tyson told the Daily News, apparently indicating he's been sober since last August. 'It's a struggle, but as of now I'm winning. I can only deal with the moment, and as of this moment I'm dealing with it very well.'"

As much fun as it was all these years making fun of Mike Tyson's antics, perhaps the man should be given credit for making a real effort to carve out a new legacy for himself.
