After the unexpected breakup of Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki McIlroy seemed to be doing all right on the golf course, stringing together some winning rounds and winning the European Tour BMW PGA Championship. Until Friday, that is. Just hours after the Irish star's ex-girlfriend changed her avatar on Twitter to a picture of her last Halloween in a witch costume, McIlroy's game went down the toilet. Could this spark rumors of Woz engaging in cult activities and casting revenge curses? No, it's clearly punch in that cauldron.
Rory led the first round of the Nationwide Memorial Tournament but after shooting a dismal 78 in the second he tumbled down the leaderboard hard (via The Guardian):
"Overnight leader Rory McIlroy experienced a stunning free-fall down the leaderboard after carding three consecutive double-bogeys in the second round of the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio on Friday.
"'I just kept missing fairways and making it tough for myself and obviously that little three-hole stretch didn't help,' the Northern Irishman told reporters.
"'Take those three holes out and it wouldn't have been that bad a day but these little runs I'm getting on it just seems to get away from me.'"
So far this year, McIlroy has shot a 77, 76, 74, and a 78 in the second round.
So is it Caroline Wozniacki's fault? The Danish tennis star has been reaching out to fans and friends via Twitter since getting dumped. So it's obvious that her recent picture change would carry ominous undertones (via USA Today):
"Look, it's possible Caroline is really excited about Halloween being five months away and changed her avatar to reflect that. But it's hard not to make a connection between the photo of her menacingly brewing up a spell and the events of the past 10 days."
All MacBeth imagery aside, there is obviously a connection to recent events that Caroline is expressing. It's kind of creepy, and kind of cool. It's also kind of sad. What was Rory thinking? She's great!
