Golf fans are wondering about Tiger Woods' return date with a certain amount of trepidation. When he comes back from back surgery, will he be able to compete at the same level? Will he even come close? One man who is confident in Tiger is legend Jack Nicklaus. The Golden Bear predicts that Woods will eventually pass his record of most victories at a Majors tournament.
While the current landscape of the PGA is pretty healthy there don't appear to be any breakout stars on the verge of dominating the game. If Woods makes a full recovery, he could still be the Jordan of golf.
But more specifically, he's chasing history. And Nicklaus thinks that Woods' body is his only opponent to closing in on 18 Majors wins (via SB Nation):
"'If he's healthy, I think Tiger's got 10-plus years to play top-quality tournament golf,' offered Nicklaus. 'I've said many times, he's got a little over 40 tournaments to play the major championships, he's only got to win five to pass my record. As good a player as he is, I don't think that should be a big deal.'"
To clarify, 18 wins ties the record, 19 beats it.
So that brings the conversation back to the question "When?" Woods has sung the praises of his surgeon and is doing rehab religiously, but the famously cerebral player is not going to foolishly rush back in (via USA Today):
"Unfortunately, I won't be there because I'm not yet physically able to play competitive golf. I'd like to convey my regrets to the USGA leadership, the volunteers and the fans that I won't be at Pinehurst. The U.S. Open is very important to me, and I know it's going to be a great week. Despite missing the first two majors, and several other important tournaments, I remain very optimistic about this year and my future."
Woods still has a lot of time. He is committed to health and wellness. And he is patient. So when Tiger comes back, expect him to be back for real.
