New ‘Penny Dreadful’ Episode Preview: Josh Hartnett Talks Return After Turning Down ‘Superman,’ ‘Batman’ & ‘Spider-Man’ Roles [SPOILERS]

Penny Dreadful is all new this weekend. Check out the new episode preview for the Showtime series starring Josh Hartnett. Hartnett who turned down several big roles in films like Superman, Batman and Spider-Man, has now opened up about returning to the headlines.

The official plot synopsis for this week’s all new episode, titled “Demimonde," reads:

“Vanessa’s infatuation with Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) continues to grow. Professor Abraham Van Helsing (David Warner) is hired by Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) to work with Dr. Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway) to uncover a cure to the disease that might be affecting his daughter. Fenton (Olly Alexander) draws his master to Sir Malcolm’s mansion.”

Josh Hartnett has been away from the spotlight from some time now. He even turned down some pretty major roles as Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man.

Hartnett recently told Details about why he didn’t wanna be a hero.

Spider-Man was something we talked about. Batman was another one. But I somehow knew those roles had potential to define me, and I didn't want that. I didn't want to be labeled as Superman for the rest of my career. I was maybe 22, but I saw the danger.”

Hartnett recently spoke to Delaware Online about his life outside of the headlines:

“The narrative that’s been created over the last couple months is that I disappeared, and I was some hermit for the last few years and joined a cult or something. It’s just crazy. ... I was doing work I thought was worthy...Being 35 and not 18, I’m less susceptible to the negative aspects”

Penny Dreadful airs this Sunday night at 10:00 p.m. on Showtime. What do you think about the series? Do you want it to get picked for another season? Let us know in the comments section at the bottom of the page.
