MLS all-time scorer Landon Donovan was unexpectedly cut from the US World Cup team last week. Coach Jurgen Klinsmann's snub of the 3-time World Cup player in favor of Aron Johannsson. Landon expressed surprise but kept his cool as he returned to work for the LA Galaxy. As sales of his World Cup jersey are still strong despite his absence from the roster, he is also being pursued by ESPN and FOX as an announcer for the World Cup tournament.
Donovan was definitely caught by surprise last week when he was cut from the US team. As one of the nation's leading players and the MLS all-time top scorer as well as a World Cup veteran, the soccer world was shocked when he didn't make it. Donovan was among that number (via Huffington Post):
"'I'm disappointed. I'm sad,' Donovan said Saturday after the Galaxy's practice. 'I'm human, and I wanted to go. I really wanted to go. I'm at peace with it. I respect the decision. I just feel in my heart that I deserve to be there, and that's the pill that's hardest to swallow.'"
Due to his massive popularity his US team no. 10 shirt is still for sale (via USA Today):
"If you want to buy a player t-shirt from U.S. Soccer's online store, there's two choices - a Clint Dempsey No. 8 shirt and a Landon Donovan No. 10. Though Jurgen Klinsmann sent Donovan to the clearance rack, his jersey sales live on."
Since Donovan won't be playing, both FOX and ESPN are both courting him to sit at the announcer's table as an analyst (Major League Soccer). He's done the job before so it shouldn't be a surprise if he ends up taking one of them up on it.
