Adrien "The Problem" Broner is in the news just about every day. Whether it's for making racist comments after a fight, his subsequent suspension, or his recent $1000 giveaway to a homeless man, Broner is a magnet for controversy. The giveaway stunt has garnered both praise and criticism.
The so-called Can-Man earned widespread kudos last weekend for giving $1000 to a man in the street. Homeless advocates were praising Broner's generosity and seemed willing to forgive and forget some of Broner's past transgressions (via TMZ):
"Adrian Broner is an INSPIRATION ... so says a rep for the National Organization For the Homeless who tells TMZ Sports the boxing champ should be applauded for giving $1k to an unsuspecting homeless man earlier this week...
"Some people have criticized the move as a shameless publicity stunt -- but N.C.F.H. says other ballers should follow Broner's lead."
That all came crashing down when the same guy was found just days later with a huge black eye and the same clothes on. He had been beaten and robbed. Critics blamed Broner for publicizing his good deed and exposing the homeless man's identity making him a sitting duck.
So even if the incident was a sincere attempt to help someone, Broner's reputation tainted it in many people's eyes, especially since it went all wrong. Perhaps the lesson is this: you can't win it all back with one stroke (via Boxing Buzz):
"... While it's reasonable to poke holes in Broner's good deed and assume that it was all just a publicity stunt gone bad, it's also safe to assume that the flamboyant fighter certainly didn't intend to make this homeless man a walking target.
"But, because of two full years of well-earned bad press and well-deserved ill will, Broner is at the point where the benefit of the doubt will forever be beyond reach for both professional and personal matters."

If Broner really has a good heart and wants to change his persona, he'll have to do it slowly and with genuine hard work. He'll have to earn it.
