Boxing great Hector 'Macho' Camacho remains critical condition after being shot outside a bar in his native Puerto Rico on Tuesday according to the LA Times.
Camacho was shot in the face and the neck while sitting in a Ford Mustang outside a bar while a man another man in the vehicle was killed.The incident happen in Camacho's hometown of Bayamon and the motive for the attack is still unknown this according to the Associate Press.
Now 50, Camacho can boast one of the most impressive records in modern day boxing going 79-6-3 in 88 pro bouts in a career that spanned almost a decade.
One of the men he faced in the ring was multiple champion was Oscar De La Hoya and news of Camacho's attack prompted De La Hoya to wish him the best.
"My heart and prayers go out to him and his family," De La Hoya said Tuesday. "I really do hope he makes it out OK."
Known for his grit and personality Hector Camacho was a well liked figure in his sport and boxing publicist Bill Caplan said he was one of the best."When he was young, you couldn't hit him, that's why he won his first 50 fights," said Caplan.
Caplan also talked about the character as a fighter and even in defeat Camacho had spirit and recalled one of his few losses against Greg Haugen at Las Vegas' Caesars Palace.
"You'd think the guy would be devastated, but 15 minutes after the loss, he was back in press row for the second fight of the HBO doubleheader, shaking everyone's hands," Caplan said. "Just a happy-go-lucky guy who loved people."
