Vikings Draft Pick Terry Bridgewater, Quarterback Matt Cassel Mentoring Rookie?

Long-time backup quarterback Matt Cassel is gunning for the starting spot for the Vikings this year. But the fresh-faced rookie Terry Bridgewater is probably looking to secure the spot as well. So while there is bound to be competition, is there also the possibility that the veteran Cassel is going to be mentoring the young draft pick?

In the context of the conversation, to ask Cassel whether he sees himself as a mentor implies he will be passed over as starter and merely serve to advise and guide the hot new rookie to success.

Seemingly aware of that conflict of interest Cassel deflected diplomatically when asked the question (via TMZ):

"Vikings QB Matt Cassel doesn't really view himself as a mentor to newly drafted QB Teddy Bridgewater ... telling TMZ Sports, 'I'm just a teammate brotha.'

"Cassel recently signed a new $10 million contract with the Vikings -- which most people took as a sign that he would be starter when the 2014 season begins.

"That was until the Vikes took Bridgewater in the 1st round of the NFL Draft -- and rumblings immediately began that the starting job was up for grabs."

While Cassel has a chance to retain his presumptive spot Christian Ponder seems destined for the number 3 spot after failing to bring success as a starter (via Sports Illustrated):

"... There is no way that the staff is going to bury Bridgewater behind Ponder as a third-string guy. The failure of the Ponder era is what led to Bridgewater's selection in the first place. Count on Bridgewater to claim at least the No. 2 gig by Week 1."

So despite stiff competition the veteran Cassel at least has shown poise and discipline with the press, which could help his cause as those are desirable leadership traits. Or at least they'll come in handy if he has to haul a clipboard around for another season.
