The NBA is voting on June 3 on whether to vote Donald and Shelly Sterling out of the league and force the sale of the LA Clippers after Donald Sterling was outed as a racist last month. While overtures have been made by the Sterlings concerning a potential voluntary sale the league seems intent on going through the process of voting them out.
There are a number of questions on both sides about the legality of the league proceedings versus the Sterlings' autonomy at this point. One thing is for sure: no one in the league wants a long drawn out process.
Earlier this week the Sterlings announced that they would voluntarily sell the team, but the NBA insisted they would still have a vote to remove the Sterlings from the league per Donald's violation of the Constitution and its bylaws (via ESPN):
"The league was still set on the previous course despite news of the potential sale.
"Said NBA spokesman Mike Bass in a release: 'We continue to follow the process set forth in the NBA Constitution regarding termination of the current ownership interests in the Los Angeles Clippers and are proceeding toward a hearing on this matter on June 3.'"
The expedient process would be ideal for all involved, as the alternative would likely involve months or years of litigation, but some are saying that the NBA would still have to approve the sale per their bylaws (via ESPN):
"Still at issue is whether the NBA will allow Shelly Sterling to control the sale of the team. The league issued a statement Friday stating it intends to proceed with a June 3 hearing that would terminate Donald Sterling's ownership of the team. The league has made it clear that it would only consider a sale of the team if Shelly Sterling sold it in its entirety."
All anyone knows for sure is that the NBA are serious about the issue and wish to resolve it quickly and completely.
