Just days after wedding invitations were sent out, golf pro Rory McIlroy dumped his fiancée Caroline Wozniacki. Rory spoke well of his ex but just copped out at the last minute. The breakup has clearly been devastating for Woz but she has put on a brave face through her tweets. And buddy Serena Williams vows to defend her friend no matter what.
Picture perfect couple McIlroy and Wozniacki seemed to be headed for a storybook romance happy ending. Then the northern Irish McIlroy got cold feet and publicly called off the engagement just days after the invitations were sent out (via TMZ):
"Wozniacki finally broke her silence Thursday morning ... on Twitter ... saying she's going through a 'hard time right now' ever since Rory announced that he dumped her a** after mailing out wedding invitations because he got scared.
"In her message on Twitter, the tennis star also noted that she supports the Liverpool soccer team right now because 'I know I'll never walk alone.'
"After she posted the message, Serena Williams tweeted back at her ... writing, 'I'll always walk with you #friendsforever.'"
Serena Williams definitely came through big time in the best friend role in this situation. But McIlroy is gunning for the regretful, sensitive and equally-heartbroken ex-boyfriend role, and even if nobody believes it, he's done a damn good job of selling it (via UK Daily Mail):
"Rory McIlroy confessed to mixed emotions after pulling off an incredible victory in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth on Sunday...
"McIlroy sprayed the champagne to mark his success but there were no wild celebrations later, and McIlroy admitted that was partly due to his split from fiancee Caroline Wozniacki on the eve of the event."
Wow! He backed out of a huge commitment, won a golf tournament, and shed a tear for the camera as if to say "I have feelings too, mate." Cuz he's Irish. Not just Australians say it.
