A cluster of soloist will dominate Alice Tully Hall in the Lincoln Center on Dec. 7 as they come together in a night of Baroque at the Manhattan venue.
The Chamber Music Society of the Lincoln Center will have tickets on sale from $45 for the event which will see one of the eldest of musical art forms being performed. The artists on the night are harpsichordist Kenneth Cooper, violinist Ani Kavafian as well as cellist Mihai Marica.
They will be joined by flutist Sooyun Kim while James Austin Smith will play the oboe and Bram van Sambeek will be the bassoonist.
The Baroque group will perform the work of Boddecker's 1651 piece "Sonata sopra la monica for Basson, Violin and Continuo." Bach's "Sonata in A major for Violin and Harpsichord, BMV 1015 (Before 1725)" will also be played as well as his "Trio Sonata in C minor for Flute, Violin and Continuo," from Musical Offering, BMV 1079 from 1747."
Heinichen's "Concerto in G major for Oboe, Bassoon, Cello and Continuo," will played and so to Zelenka's "Sonata No.3 in B-flat major for Violin, Oboe, Bassoon and Continuo, ZWV 181 (c. 1721-22)."
The last offering on the night will come from Vivaldi and his "Concerto in D major for Flute, Oboe, Violin, Bassoon and Continuo, RV 95, 'La Pastorella," (1716)."
Baroque music is the precursor to what we know as classical music. Baroque music was set between the period of 1600 and 1760 a roughly 150 year cycle. It introduced the notion of tonal functionality which can be defined as the relationship of a chord with other chords in the key.
Baroque is still utilized today and listened to. Known artist for this genre are Johann Sebastian Bach and Henry Purcell.
