After being suspended by the WBC for making racist comments against a Mexican boxer Adrien Broner is in the news again. This time he found a homeless man on the street and gave him $1000. Then in an unfortunate turn of events the man was found beaten down and robbed.
Last week Adrien Broner pulled a kind of homespun PR stunt that at least seemed like it was born of good intentions (via TMZ):
"The reigning WBA International Super Lightweight noticed the guy panhandling on a street corner ... and with a wad of $100s in his hand, turns to the camera and says 'Now this is gonna make his f**king day right here.'
"He was right ... and when the homeless man didn't think it could be real, Broner gave him a fist pound to prove it was legit."
Then just a few days later the video crew caught up with the homeless guy who had a bad day (via TMZ):
"In a video posted on World Star Hip Hop, the homeless man -- sporting a nasty black eye -- says he was hours away from going to put money down on an apartment when when he was attacked by two men.
"The man implies that he was targeted because of the video Broner posted -- and says he only spent $20 or $30 of the $1k."
Even if the intentions were good they probably should have tried better to protect this guy's identity. It seems like this was entirely avoidable. Broner should think a little harder before interfering with people's lives. Especially if it's part of some half-baked scheme to improve one's public image. Otherwise, he will just keep looking like a jerk that threw away $1000 because you he can afford it.
