Aldon Smith pleaded no-contest this week to multiple charges ranging from weapons to DUI to drug possession over the last two years. The San Francisco 49ers Linebacker has had numerous run ins with the law since 2012 including being stabbed at his own house party.
The 24 year-old NFL star is facing three felony charges of possessing an illegal assault weapon at a house party in his San Jose home back in June 2012 (via CBS Sports):
"Smith will be sentenced on July 25 and could face up to 52 months in prison. Prosecutor Brian Buckelew told the Mercury News that the length of Smith's sentence will come at the sole discretion of the judge, 'It's from zero days to four years and four months.'
"There will also likely be more punishment for Smith from the NFL in the form of a suspension. Smith violated the league's substance-abuse policy with the DUI. The no contest plea to the weapons-related charges also constitutes a violation of the NFL's personal conduct policy."
Smith was stabbed at the party in question, although, there was no serious injury.
Smith also faces multiple DUI charges and at least one count of possession of Marijuana. During one of his DUI arrests pills were found in his car but it is unclear whether he has been charged in connection with the pills.
While Smith will most likely see some jail time Buckelew thinks his sentence will be lighter if he stays out of trouble and the judge will probably take that into account.
What do you think? Should leniency be granted by the judge? Has Smith learned the error of his hard partying ways or will he just learn how to avoid getting caught?
