Retired Super Bowl Champion Jim Mcmahon NFL Drug Lawsuit, Golf, Dementia

Jim McMahon, retired quarterback and revered Super Bowl Champion, is part of a lawsuit filed by several former NFL players who allege that the league consistently gave players illegal painkilling drugs to get more performance from them. McMahon has said in the past that his numerous injuries have left him with dementia. Although they haven't affected his golf game.

Jim McMahon was a leader of men. He led his 1985 Chicago Bears to one of the most exciting Super Bowl victories ever. Now he is not quite so agile (via Greenville Online):

"Looking back, though, on a 15-year NFL career that was marked by a reckless abandon particularly uncommon for quarterbacks of the era, the hard hits aren't so funny. McMahon said he suffers physically and mentally from his time in the NFL, and he has been part of a lawsuit seeking compensation for suffering former players.

"... He has said he contemplated suicide and suffered from dementia. He said he would play baseball rather than football if he had it to do over again... But he also said the game that made him famous need not be cast aside for the athletes of the future."

All those injuries don't stop him from playing a nice a game of golf, however. Even though he plays barefoot because it's so painful to wear shoes, it fits his casual, relaxed rebel attitude.

The lawsuit alleges that team doctors and trainers administered illegal drugs meant to mask the pain of serious injuries, all in the name of keeping star players on the field competing in order to maximize the NFL's profits.

The NFL's current drug policy must have looked like a joke to the owners and coaches of the 1980's.
