Apart from a largely successful event last weekend the Brooklyn Half Marathon did have one note of tragedy. An unidentified man collapsed at the finish line and died on the way to the hospital. His unexplained death certainly dampened the mood of the race and related celebrations, however, such as one woman's barrage of selfies strategically taken to include hipsters in the background.
There is scarcely any information on the runner yet, however local news issued a brief statement (via Time Warner Cable News New York): A runner who took part in this weekend's Brooklyn Half Marathon is dead.
"Officials with New York Road Runners say the 31-year-old man collapsed at the finished line and was taken to Coney Island hospital.
"There is no word on what caused his death.
"Thousands took part in the 13.1 mile race on Saturday.
"A spokesperson for the New York Road Runners says everyone's thoughts and sympathies are with the runner's family and those close to him."
On the sunnier side, aspiring actor and running enthusiast Kelly Roberts spent the entire race taking carefully positioned selfies with hipsters in the background. It's part of a larger project called Run. Selfie. Repeat.

It's kind of precious what we can do with communications technology, social media and a little imagination. Someone with a fresh idea can brighten a million people's days in an instant. Keep up the good work, young creative professionals of Brooklyn and beyond!
Speaking of marathons, the Boston marathon was a triumph in the face of last year's horrific bombing. But positive attitudes prevailed, thanks in part to Ken E. Nwadike, Jr. for giving out free hugs.
