The Dublin Guitar Quartet has released a new recording of Philip Glass' string quartets on their own Orange Mountain Music label.
Glass is a heavyweight in minimal composition, yes, and The Dublin String Quartet Performs Philip Glass is a milestone for the foursome, a culmination of their reworkings and refinings of Glass' stringed transcriptions.
The press release states:
Philip Glass is one of the world's most celebrated living composers. Through his operas, film scores, symphonies, compositions for his own ensemble, and his wide-ranging collaborations with artists including Twyla Tharp, Allen Ginsberg, Woody Allen, and David Bowie, Glass has had an extraordinary impact upon the musical and intellectual life of his times.
Taking the stage with that other great minimalist at BAM this summer, these DGQ transcriptions add a new dimension to four expressive and dynamic Glass works.
The album was released in the states on May 13; the Irish album launch will take place in Dublin in early June.
