Ray Rice Assault: No Jail Time After Alleged Atlantic City Wife Beating, Pretrial Intervention [UPDATE]

Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice will most likely not serve any jail time on the felony aggravated assault case against him. After applying for pretrial intervention Rice will not be prosecuted for the alleged Atlantic City beating of wife Jenay in February.

Rice had pleaded not guilty of aggravated assault at the beginning of May after a run-in with then fiancée Jeney Palmer. The pretrial intervention will allow Rice to opt out of court though he would still have a black mark (via CBS Sports):

"If Rice successfully completes the intervention program -- it will take at least a year -- the third-degree aggravated assault charge would be dismissed. And while the arrest would remain on his record, there would be no conviction.

"'This decision was arrived at after careful consideration of the information contained in Mr. Rice's application in light of all of the facts gathered during the investigation,' acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain said. 'After considering all relevant information in light of applicable law, it was determined that this was the appropriate disposition.'"

Even if Rice gets through the ordeal unscathed there is still a chance he will face suspension by the NFL. If the league feels Rice's image could be damaging they could make an example out of him. Footage surfaced of Rice dragging Palmer out of an elevator shortly after the incident. That kind of publicity is exactly what Commissioner Roger Goodell would like to avoid.

Sources inside the Ravens organization, however, are skeptical that such measures will be taken.

What do you think? Should Ray Rice be suspended even if he isn't convicted? If he pleaded not guilty, why did Rice apply for PTI? What factors would weigh in on Roger Goodell's decision?
