LA Dodgers Dodgeball Scandal After Butera, Gordon Bully Kids? Dodgeball Too Violent?

LA Dodgers' Drew Butera and Dee Gordon got caught in a minor scandal Monday when they showed up to dominate some little kids in dodgeball. Of course it was all fun and games but this comes at a time when the national debate over dodgeball is at its most heated, many education experts saying it has no place in public school as it is too violent and promotes bullying.

It all seemed like fun and games when two Dodgers decided to film a clip of them whooping up on a bunch of grade-school kids in the schoolyard (via TMZ):

"It was pure domination on the dodgeball courts in NYC today -- when L.A. Dodgers stars Drew Butera (catcher) and Dee Gordon (2nd baseman) DESTROYED a bunch of elementary school kids ... and it was all caught on tape.

"The MLB stars took on kids from Grace Church School in a match that was taped for the MTV2 show Off the Bat.

"Don't worry, it doesn't seem like anyone was hurt -- and it was all in good fun."

Not so says Ken Reed in an op-ed piece for the Huffington Post:

"I can still vividly remember the joy and excitement I felt after hearing my gym teacher say, 'We're playing dodgeball today.' I didn't realize it at the time, but for many of my classmates, hearing those same words elicited dread and terror.

"But quality physical education doesn't include dodgeball. While I certainly appreciate that some children... get enjoyment from the game of dodgeball, it simply doesn't represent developmentally appropriate content for school-based physical education programs. Dodgeball turns children into human targets, allows for bullying, and is humiliating for some students."

What do you think? Should Dodgeball be banned from public schools? Or is it harmless fun?
