Wes Welker had a big day at the track back on May 3. He had a big win at the Kentucky Derby. Collecting an estimated $57.1 million at cash out, Welker was so ecstatic that he started passing out $100 Bills to strangers until track security sent him along his way. They probably avoided a riot, but they couldn't avoid the aftermath of a machine malfunction that reportedly overpaid Welker by $15 thousand. Legally he seems bound to return it but doesn't seem to be in a hurry.
Derby Day ended up pretty sweetly for Denver Broncos wild man Wes Welker. After placing a number of bets, Welker eventually won big and sent a friend to cash him out (via TMZ):
"Sources tell us Welker sent a friend to collect his winnings -- and that person was paid out $57,193.90 at the cashier's window.
"Wes was so pumped, he started handing out $100 bills to random strangers.
"But we've learned ... officials at the track believe there was an error at the window DURING the moments Welker's ticket was being paid out ... (we're told it was computer malfunction compounded by human error) ... and the result was Wes being overpaid to the tune of $14,858.55."
A spokesperson for Churchill Downs said they immediately sent a letter to the recipient and asked that he return the money. It seems that he has no legal claim to the money and should expect to return it either voluntarily or not.
However, Welker commented on the situation on Friday's edition of The Dan Patrick Show. His response was simply, "Get in line."
What do you think? Should Welker have to give the money back? If it was computer error and the transaction was already made, would the racetrack do the same if they had underpaid?
