Snoop Dogg is obviously more than rapper. And he's obviously more than a mogul. Many celebrities talk about giving back to the community but few do it with the verve and sincerity of Snoop Dogg. He is feeling pretty awesome this week because his efforts with LA-based Snoop Youth Football League produced 3 NFL Draft Picks this year. Snoop predicts the success of the SYFL to increase exponentially in the years to come.
De-Anthony Thomas, Kam Jackson, and Greg Ducre all went in the NFL Draft this year, and they all came from the SYFL (via TMZ):
"'I feel good about the guys that are coming out this year, the year after ... and the kids that are in the league right now,' Snoop says ... 'We got kids all over the SYFL that have that spirit to go to the next level!'
"Currently, Snoop has between 1,500 and 1,700 players in the league -- and the rapper says he's gunning to implement a policy where kids who maintain a 3.0 grade point average or better can play in the league for free."
More than just a vanity project, Snoop talks about building strong community and while the League is currently funded primarily through him, he hopes to have additional funding in the near future.
Almost ten years into the league's existence and the first crop are coming of age for pro ball (via Bleacher Report):
"According to the official website, the league has been going strong since 2005 and is a 'non-profit organization founded to provide the opportunity for inner-city children to participate in youth football and cheer.'
"The goal, according to the league, is to build more than football players: 'The SYFL serves children between the ages of five and thirteen, teaching them the values of teamwork, good sportsmanship, discipline, and self-respect, while also stressing the importance of academics.'"
