This is all happening so fast. It's like a movie. Alex Rodriguez was once a shoe-in future Hall of Famer, and the biggest scandal he could elicit was a rumored connection to Madonna. Now, in the midst of an entire season suspension for using banned substances, A-Rod is crying foul as the center of the biggest steroid scandal since Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa. Is the nearly-retired disgraced baller the victim of an MLB conspiracy, or a pawn in mastermind former drug mule Desi Perez' plan to gain a foothold in Pro Baseball?
While it has been assumed for the better part of two decades that steroid use has been common in baseball, the league and the US Government seem to have been highly selective in their targets to make major public impact in their collective effort to curb the situation. What's more is that they seem to be willing to break the law to single out individuals with high profile (via Sports Illustrated):
"Major League Baseball knowingly purchased stolen records to advance its case against Alex Rodriguez. Baseball investigators are also alleged to have been potentially involved in the records' theft. For Rodriguez and his attorneys, Payne's report and Newsday's investigation serve as a moral, if not legal, vindication. They have long insisted that baseball built a case against Rodriguez on illegal and unreliable evidence. Rodriguez, who is serving a suspension for the 2014 season, dropped his lawsuit against baseball and the players' association in February."
Act II, in which we meet Desiree Perez, a former drug runner turned informant turned fugitive who is now married to Juan Perez, president of Jay-Z's Roc Nation. Inside sources claim that Desi Perez wielded much influence over Rodriguez, and that indeed she was the one who urged A-Rod to initially fight the League's decision to suspend him (via New York Daily News):
"But multiple sources told the Daily News that A-Rod's last chance for a dignified exit ended when he turned to Desiree Perez, a Manhattan nightclub manager with a lengthy criminal record and close links to hip-hop mogul Jay Z."
Rodriguez has emphatically denied Perez' alleged influence, saying she is just a close friend. Sure A-Rod. We heard that old song and dance before (remember Madonna?)
