After Racist Controversy, Richard Sherman Replaced As Highest Paid Defensive Back [UPDATE]

Outspoken Richard Sherman is the rare talent who can back up his talk with his game. After much controversy over the last year, including his stance on the racist mascot of the Washington Redskins, Sherman also made news by becoming the highest paid defensive back in the NFL. That status lasted about a week though, and now he has been replaced.

The Cleveland Browns' Joe Haden got a 5-year deal worth $68 million just one week after Sherman's (via Seattle Pi):

"Haden's deal - which includes $45 million in guaranteed money compared to Sherman's $40 million - comes one day after fellow All-Pro Patrick Peterson said he believes his upcoming contract negotiations with the Arizona Cardinals should result in a larger extension than the four-year, $57.4 million agreement Sherman signed on May 7."

The arms race has begun as NFL teams are putting their money into pass defense. Arizona's Patrick Peterson is expecting to top both Sherman and Haden's contracts (via ESPN):

"'I think cornerbacks are definitely worth the dollars that they get because now this league is a passing league,' he said. 'You need that shutdown corner to lock down one side of the field, or like myself, go out there the entire field.'

"Rather than play one side on defense, Peterson goes from side to side to defend the opponent's best receiver. His skill and worth to the team may well drive his contract higher than Sherman's."

One thing Sherman is aware of is his image. While he presents a tough and aggressive demeanor, Sherman possesses a communications degree and thinks very carefully about what he says. Sherman's recent comments about race have kicked up some dust, but come off as very thoughtful.

What do you think? Are these cornerbacks worth all this money?
