The results are in for Clay Aiken's Democratic primary race for an NC congressional seat, and the openly gay American Idol runner up has won my a meager 390 vote lead. Clay Aiken’s Democratic primary opponent, Keith Crisco, tragically passed away earlier this week. Crisco, who was 71-years-old, passed away in his home last Monday, May 12, after failing.
Following Crisco’s tragic passing, Clay Aiken released a statement to the press:
“I am stunned and deeply saddened by Keith Crisco’s death,” he said in a statement. “Keith came from humble beginnings. No matter how high he rose--to Harvard, to the White House and to the Governor’s Cabinet--he never forgot where he came from. He was a gentleman, a good and honorable man and an extraordinary public servant. I was honored to know him. I am suspending all campaign activities as we pray for his family and friends.”
Aiken later echoed his statement in a string of Tweets:
“Keith was a true gentleman. His legacy will be one of great service to the people of NC. I was honored to know him.”
“I am stunned and deeply saddened by Keith Crisco’s death. He was a gentleman, a good and honorable man and an extraordinary public servant.”
“I am suspending all campaign activities as we pray for his family and friends.”
The results from the very close primary race are now in and Aiken has won by a slim, 390 vote margin.
Aiken will no go on to face Republican incumbent, U.S. Rep. Renee Ellmers.
Ellmers also released a statement of condolence for Crisco:
“I am deeply saddened by this sudden and painful tragedy and wish God’s blessings for Keith’s family through the coming days. His kindness and dedication to his principles were models we should all strive toward, and he will be dearly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with Keith’s family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time.”
