#22 Draft Pick Johnny Manziel started a rookie minicamp last week as the Cleveland Browns begin preparations for next fall. The training camp was held with restricted media access to prevent Johnny Football Mania to overtake the proceedings.
The Cleveland Browns seem interested in the potential benefits of a super-hyped rookie quarterback. However they understand the need to control the story. If the media coverage distracts or hinders the team in any way then the excitement of Johnny Football could nullify its own objective.
Johnny Manziel understands this as well. Although he possesses a wealth of confidence and has a magnetic star quality and the talent to boot, he is still a hard-working athlete with (so far) a good head on his shoulders.
Said Manziel in a brief session with local reporters (via ABC News):
"'I'm a rookie,' Manziel said. 'I need to earn my place. I need to earn my keep. Nothing here needs to be handed to me. I don't need to be treated based off what I did in the past, because that doesn't mean a thing at this level.'"
New head coach Mike Pettine has tried to ride the line between using Manziel's star power to good use versus keeping the wheels on the wagon:
"'We're well aware of the persona. We're well aware of what it brings,' Pettine said. 'We're excited about it... knowing that he has a chance to make us a better football team and a better franchise.'"
And speaking to the limited media access:
"I'll apologize in advance for that, but what we're tasked as a staff to do is do what's best for the football team."
What do you think? Is it wise to try to control media coverage? Or are the Browns just poking a hungry beast?
