Molly Bust As Ex-NFL Player Arrested for MDMA Posession

A sting operation last week led to an arrest of Ex-NFL football player for possession of MDMA, or Molly. The bust came just days after Reche Caldwell was arrested for trying to sell Ecstasy on the street.

Police must have already been watching Caldwell since they tagged him a few days earlier. The sting led to a much bigger drug haul (via New York Daily News):

"Former NFL receiver Reche Caldwell was busted for possession of nearly five pounds of MDMA, a pure form of ecstasy known by the street name 'Molly.'

"Acting on a tip, cops in Tampa arrested Caldwell Tuesday afternoon shortly after he signed for a USPS package containing 4.8 pounds of MDMA, CBS reported. Police confirmed the 'rocky substance' in the box was MDMA and put the value of the bust between $60,000 and $64,000.

"According to TMZ's calculations, however, Molly sells for $80 per gram - or $35,840 per pound - meaning Caldwell allegedly had approximately $180,000 worth of drugs on him at the time of his arrest.

"Caldwell, 35, was already awaiting trial stemming from a January arrest on charges of running an illegal gambling ring."

All this came after his original arrest last Friday (via TMZ):

"The 35-year-old -- played for the Chargers, Patriots and Redskins -- was busted at an apartment in Tampa around noon ... after cops say he was trying to slang some E pills.

"Caldwell was booked for possession of a controlled substance. Bail was set at $2K."

The NFL should really be more proactive in training athletes on how to transition into legitimate business dealings. It's a systemic problem when players keep either going broke or locked up for trying not to go broke. The league should bear some responsibility in helping avoid some of these arrests by teaching these ambitious, intelligent young men how to focus their entrepreneurial spirit in an acceptable way.
