The Metropolitan Opera House will give its rendition of the Mozart piece "Don Giovanni," when it opens for the season at the New York venue on Nov. 28 and will continue until Dec. 20.
"Don Giovanni," had a successful run on the west coast with the Los Angeles Opera headed by Spanish tenor Placido Domingo receiving positive reviews from critics.
"For someone who is new to "Don Giovanni," this production would make an excellent introduction," said Richard S. Ginell of the Los Angeles Times.
The New York version of the Mozart favorite will be in the hands of producer Michael Grandage, who unlike Domingo's "Don Giovanni", will go with one set actors, instead of three for the production.
Grandage's star, Don Giovanni, will be played by Russian Ildar Abrazakov with Emma Bell taking on the role of Donna Elvira. Donna Anna will be played by soprano Susanna Phillips, while the part of Zerlina went to Russian soprano Ekaterina Siurina. Don Giovanni's, right hand man, Leporello, has been charged to Uruguayan bass Erwin Schott with New York tenor Charles Castornovo taking on the role as Don Ottavio.
The Commendatore, will be played by bass Raymond Aceto and Masetto will be handled by David Soar. Adding musical tone to the opera will be English conductor Edward Gardner.
Grandage's backstage crew consists of set and costume designer Christopher Oram, lighting designer Paule Constable and choreography for this almost three and a half hour production was done by Mr. Ben Wright.
For those unfamiliar with the Mozart piece "Don Giovanni," the opera is based around the main character and his womanizing exploits with his sidekick Leporello, trying to reign in the Italian Don Juan.
