‘Hedwig’ Neil Patrick Harris Talks David Letterman Replacement Before Colbert: CBS Cancels ‘HIMYM’ Spin-Off ‘HIMYD’

Neil Patrick Harris was this close to taking over for David Letterman before his company costar Stephen Colbert got the gig. The former How I Met Your Mother turned Hedwig and the Angry Inch star, recently spilt the beans about his late night job offer and just why he decided to turn it down. Speaking of turning things down, CBS has pulled the plug on the How I Met Your Mother spin-off How I Met Your Dad. The show was canceled before it ever got picked up.

Harris recently revealed to Howard Stern that he was in talks with CBS about taking over for David Letterman. NPH explained to The King of All Media about just why he didn’t take the job:

"They called me in and sat me down and asked if that would be something I'd be interested in doing….I felt like I knew what my skill set was and what I wanted to do after the show, with them. It surprised me [Moonves] pitched me that idea. I sat for a time with it while I was talking to him, and I told him what concerned me about the longevity of that kind of gig. I think I would get bored of the repetition fast. The structure is so set--I don't have any interest in doing monologue, commercial, sketch, guest, guest, musical act, good night."

CBS also passed on the How I Met Your Mother spin-off How I Met Your Dad. The network wanted the producers to re-film the pilot episode without a full series order. CBS' Nina Tassler recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about passing on the show:

"There were elements on the pilot that didn't work out. We tried to work out about redoing the pilot. That's not happening right now. Sometimes you run into these kind of issues and you hope they can resolve themselves in that time frame…. I'm heartsick; we loved this brand and we love the producers but it didn't work out...Re-piloting was in the best interest of protecting the creative elements of the show. That was our position, not necessarily theirs."
