James Blake finally broke his silence today, commenting on the fire and explosion that burned his million dollar Tampa mansion to the ground, as well as the murder suicide that led to the fire.
Blake had not been living in the Tampa, Florida mansion for quite some time, but was leasing it. He said that he had never met Darrin Campbell face-to-face, that they only exchanged a few e-mails (via Courant):
"Retired tennis player James Blake said Thursday he didn't know the people who were renting his Florida home that was destroyed by fire, after the man who was living there allegedly shot his wife and teenage children before setting the home ablaze and then killing himself last week.
"'It's a really sad situation,' Blake said at the Connecticut Tennis Center Thursday, where he made an announcement that he would play in a Legends event in August during the New Haven Open.
"'My heart and prayers go out to the family that's involved. I was up here in Connecticut and heard the news same as everyone else. I hope the police and the investigators handle the situation as they need to and keep me in the loop.'
"Police said Darrin Campbell was renting Blake's million-dollar home in a gated community near Tampa at the time of the crime. He apparently had no criminal history and no motive has been established."
Blake, who lives in Westport, Connecticut with his family, went to New Haven to teach free tennis lessons to city schoolchildren. Over 350 kids attended the lesson.
The particulars of Darrin Campbell's possible motive are still unknown, and the heartbreaking story will not have a proper conclusion until police can find out why he did what he did.
