‘Mass Effect’ Movie Update: 2016 Release Date Set Before J.K. Rowling ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Film? [RUMORS]

Universal has set a date for many believe might be the Mass Effect Movie. The studio has laid claim to Nov. 4, 2016, and according to The Hollywood Reporter the date is being reserved for "Untitled 2016 Event Project." This day comes just a few before Universal launches its Potterverse film, J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Could we really be this close to seeing Commander Shepard on the big screen?

Video game movies have had the best track record with fans. For the most part they have been awful, just think: Super Mario Brothers, Mortal Kombat, and every single one of those horrible, horrible Resident Evil films. However, that might all soon change. Universal has signed a deal with Legendary Pictures to produce two video game films, Mass Effect and World of Warcraft.

Recently, Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull spoke with IGN about adapting both game franchise into films, and how Mass Effect was harder than WOW:

"That's a story that we love. And it's incredibly sprawling and complex. We're not going to screw up Commander Shepard. That's another one of those things where we're being a little bit precious about it, but unless we feel like we can absolutely crack it and know what the movie is, we're just not in the position where we have to make stuff just because we have to. That's the way we treat every one of these. I'm a huge Mass Effect fan. I play. I'm personally a fan of all these different things, and we don't to screw them up, so that's the way we go into these. The bar is very high, and that's just our approach."

He went to praise the games complex mythology, adding:

“I think the canon they've created is sophisticated. It's very broad, meaning you can't pitch that in 30 seconds, right? It's a complex story. So it is challenging. If it wasn't challenging, the movie would have been out by now, but it is. We've just got to stick to our guns that, if it's a movie that's going to come from us, we want it to be great. If we can't crack that yet then we just have to keep working.”
