Donald Sterling finally spoke out about the tape of his racist tirade. The disgraced owner of the LA Clippers spoke to Anderson Cooper about Magic Johnson having AIDS (he doesn't) how he wanted to apologize (he didn't, not really) and about how maybe he's just a foolish old man (Yes!) His comments, including his fake apology, all add up to one thing: FAIL!
It almost seemed like Donald Sterling was being set up. Anderson Cooper invited him to speak, asked him some questions, and stepped out of the way of a man who seems determined to self-destruct.
In one of the most insincere, half-hearted attempts at public apology in recent memory, Sterling rung his hands about the terrible mistake he made before completely lashing out at V. Stiviano for baiting him and Magic Johnson for having AIDS and refusing to help African Americans.
Here is a transcript of some of the interview (via CNN):
"'When I listen to that tape, I don't even know how I can say words like that. ... I don't know why the girl had me say those things,' he told CNN's Anderson Cooper in an exclusive interview set to air on Monday.
"'You're saying you were set up?' Cooper asked.
"'Well yes, I was baited,' Sterling said. 'I mean, that's not the way I talk. I don't talk about people for one thing, ever. I talk about ideas and other things. I don't talk about people.'"
So, other than being baited into saying hateful, racist things during a private conversation did Sterling have anything else to say?
Well it looks like Sterling was tricked into putting his foot in his mouth again. Shame on you Anderson Cooper. When asked about Magic Johnson Sterling went on another rant (via Huffington Post):
"'Big, Magic Johnson, what has he done?' Sterling asked Cooper. 'He's got AIDS.'
"Cooper clarified that Johnson was diagnosed with HIV, not AIDS. Sterling went on, 'What kind of a guy has sex with every girl, then he catches HIV? Is that someone we want to respect and tell our kids about? I think he should be ashamed of himself. I think he should go into the background. What does he do for the black people?'"
Wow. Just, wow.
