Conductor Sir John Eliot Gardiner will lead not only the Orchestre Revolutionnaire but also The Montiverdi Choir through a night of Beethoven at Carnegie Hall on Saturday.
"In the hands of Sir John Eliot Gardiner and his period-instrument ensemble, Beethoven takes on a distinctive vibrancy and jubilant excitement that leaves audiences breathless. Last season, they brought four of Beethoven's symphonies to Carnegie Hall, and on this concert they return with The Montiverdi Choir for the monumental Ninth and its celebrated Ode to Joy," said Carnegie.
Sir Gardiner will have alongside him not just the orchestra and choir but the likes of mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnston, soprano Elisabeth Meister, tenor Michael Spyres and bass Matthew Rose.
The ensemble will perform the works of Beethoven, firstly his "Meeresstille und gluckliche Fahrt," followed by his "Symphony No.9."
When one talks of the Montiverdi Choir and the Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique, Sir John Eliot Gardiner is at the epicenter of the discussion having founded both entities.
The choir was formed in 1964 by the Englishman and is Baroque ensemble although dabbling in Classical music from time to time .The orchestra was created in 1989 and specializes in Classical and Romantic music with the ensemble recording symphonies that include the works of Beethoven , Berlioz, Verdi and Brahms to name a few.
As for the man himself, Sir John Eliot Gardiner began his journey in music at the age of 15 where he took up the baton. He received his schooling at Bryanston School and then took on studies as an undergraduate at King's College, Cambridge where he learnt history and Arabic.
In his fledgling career he toured the Middle East conducting the Oxford and Cambridge Singers. As mention he formed a number of organizations with his specialty coming in Baroque music.
He enjoys close ties with numerous orchestras the world over having conducted the likes of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO), Berlin Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO), London Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic just to name a few.
