‘OITNB’ Season 2 Release Date: Uzo Aduba Talks Crazy Eyes and ‘DWTS’ Julianne Hough Blackface Controversy

Orange is the New Black Season 2 is almost here. To get us readjusted to prison life, the show has released a series of “Behind the Bars” specials that spotlight your favorite prisoners. Recently Crazy Eyes A.K.A. Uzo Aduba opened up about her character, her hit “song” “Chocolate and Vanilla Swirl,” the peeing scene and even DWTS pro Julianne Hough’s Blackface controversy.

Last Halloween, Dancing with the Stars actress Julianne Hough caused a stir, when dressed up as Crazy Eyes complete with controversial blackface makeup. Hough quickly apologize for the offense. Back in November Aduba told E! News (and everyone else) to drop on the issues:

“I think maybe it was an unfortunate event, but she apologized and I feel like we can all move on."

Moving on is just what Uzo intends to do. The actress is gearing up to reprise her role in the forthcoming second season of Orange is the New Black. In a new “Behind the Bars” interview the actress opened up about the show and her character Crazy Eyes:

"She's always living from a passionate place, and it's coming from a place of good intentions and a place of love...There's no façade with Suzanne, and that's something I respect a lot about her. There's nothing fake."

Uzo is an accomplished stage actress who has recently starred on Broadway in the musical Godspell. However, she will forever be known for the show’s impromptu musical number “chocolate and vanilla swirl,”adding:

"When we were shooting it, I said, what can I do to bring something to the table.I just said 'Chocolate and vanilla swirl,' and it was just another animal."

However, it is one of her wilder scenes that really has everyone talking. Uzo recently spoke to Vulture about marking her character:

“When I read it, I honestly was like, This is not real. I am going to pee on a floor? Then I started thinking, [writer Sian Heder] did research and this actually happened: So many of these women have gotten so many things stripped from them already. You are living in a total primal environment, so why wouldn’t you do that? It’s a totally primal thing. It makes perfect sense for a character like Crazy Eyes to do something like that. I think after a certain point, we were all just like, ‘Wow. Okay.’ We just went there.”

Orange is the New Black Season Two airs on June 6.
