Adrien "The Problem" Broner is facing suspension from the World Boxing Council after his racially insensitive post fight rant following his May 3 bout with Carlos Molina. The Council issued an open letter detailing the suspension. Some, though, are wondering why action has not been taken before since the routine was not new.
At 24, young brash Broner certainly has the temperament and showmanship to be a huge draw in the squared circle. But at 24, the young brash Broner is probably his own worst enemy.
The WBC issued this formal statement concerning his comments after the fight (via USA Today):
"Adrien Broner , former WBC lightweight champion has offended many persons of the world with his words during the interview after the fight vs Molina. The World Boxing Council holds human equality as its banner and will not accept a former WBC champion to make racially offensive statements. Since words have different meanings and can be interpreted in different ways, the WBC is issuing this open letter to Adrien Broner to either clarify what he meant with his words or to issue a public apology if those words were intended to be despective(sic) and offensive. Adrien Broner is hereby suspended from participating in any WBC sanctioned Championship and will be excluded from the WBC Ratings until the time he makes a public apology satisfactorily to the public of the world. Boxing is a great sport , it is a world sport and boxers are honorable and exemplary members of the community. Fair Play and human equality must always be upheld."
While most people would agree with those words there is a puzzling question: why now? According to Scott Christ of Bad Left Hook Broner had actually made the same speech before:
"For some reason or another, after two years or so of Broner repeating this same speech, the WBC stood up and took notice..."
What do you think? Did the WBC only act because of public scrutiny after the Donald Sterling scandal?
