Jadeveon Clowney, the first player from South Carolina to be picked first in the NFL Draft since 1981, is allegedly getting a deal for an estimated $22 million after being selected by the Houston Texans. While there are no details to confirm it sites are already reporting figures. The controversial pick is definitely going to make big money, but precisely how much the contract is worth is still very much the subject of speculation.
Being drafted is a dream come true for almost every athlete. For the few who do make it into the elite ranks of professional sports. For South Carolina native son Jadeveon Clowney the air must taste a little sweeter since being drafted number 1. While the numbers have not been officially released, rumors have already begun to circulate (via Go Gamecocks):
"After the draft, Clowney said he planned to take care of his mother with his upcoming signing bonus and contract, which is expected to top $20 million."
Elsewhere, the figure is a little higher (via CNN):
"The NFL's top draft pick just landed around a $22 million contract with the Houston Texans and bragging rights for life. His face is everywhere, and his name is a trending Twitter hashtag."
Of course the money isn't on tap. Many young players blinded by the excitement of huge sums coming their way forget about potential pitfalls like taxes, fees, and injuries (via CNN):
"But while Clowney -- and hundreds of other NFL rookies -- know a lot about football, they know little about managing money. Many are likely to end up bankrupt.
"Just two years after their athletic careers end, 78% of former NFL players are bankrupt or nearly there, according to an analysis by Sports Illustrated."
Good luck, guys! And spend wisely.
What do you think? If you were given 22 million dollars what would you do with it?
