‘Game of Thrones’ New Episode Spoilers: George R.R. Martin Talks New Book, Defends Rape and Sexual Violence

Game of Thrones is all new tonight. Check the preview below for spoilers. Recently George R.R. Martin revealed the cover for the newest Ice and Fire book. Martin also defended the book and show’s depictions of rape and sexual violence.

The official plot synopsis for tonight’s all new episode, titled “The Laws of God and Men,” reads:

“Tyrion faces his father in the throne room; Stannis and Davos put their faith in a new strategy; Daenerys' sphere of influence expands.”

George R.R. Martin recently posted a picture of the cover of his newest book World of Ice & Fire on his blog along with the message:

“WORLD OF ICE & FIRE will be out in the fall. It is going to be a gorgeous book, a big coffee table volume with lots and lots of stunning artwork, and tons of fake history. We were supposed to provide 50,000 words of text, but... ah... I got carried away.”

This new book is not the long awaited sixth, Song of Ice and Fire novel. That would be the forthcoming, The Winds of Winter.

The TV show has started to venture off the path of the books. Perhaps the biggest change was having Jaime Lannister rape his sister. Martin recently defended the book and show's use of sexual violance, telling The New York Post:

“An artist has an obligation to tell the truth. My novels are epic fantasy, but they are inspired by and grounded in history. Rape and sexual violence have been a part of every war ever fought, from the ancient Sumerians to our present day. To omit them from a narrative centered on war and power would have been fundamentally false and dishonest, and would have undermined one of the themes of the books: that the true horrors of human history derive not from orcs and Dark Lords, but from ourselves. We are the monsters. (And the heroes too). Each of us has within himself the capacity for great good, and great evil.”

He also went on to defend the show’s right to change the events of the books, adding:

“The graphic novels and television programs are in the hands of others, who make their own artistic choices as to what sort of approach will work best in their respective mediums.”
