Josh Hartnett ‘Penny Dreadful’ Free Showtime Premiere Preview: Billie Piper Talks ‘Dr. Who’ Rose Spin-Off Series [TRAILER]

Tonight, Showtime’s premieres the very first episode of the new horror drama, Penny Dreadful. Don’t have Showtime...have no fear. The network is free this weekend for millions of viewers. The new show marks the TV return of Josh Hartnett. Hartnett will be joined by Billie Piper. Recently Piper opened up about the possibility of a Dr. Who Rose spin-off series.

Penny Dreadful premieres tonight. The show’s official synopsis reads:

“Monsters and demons haunt Victorian London. In the opener, police investigate a series of gruesome deaths but renowned explorer Sir Malcolm Murray and the alluring Vanessa Ives know there is something darker at play than mere murder. They recruit an American sharpshooter and Dr. Victor Frankenstein to help them find someone close to them.”

Penny Dreadful takes it name from the early 19th century pulp horror stories.

The show star’s Josh Hartnett. Hartnett was once on top of the acting world, but he turned down several major roles. Recently, Hartnett told Details about why he didn’t except a part in Spider-Man, Batman and Superman:

Spider-Man was something we talked about. Batman was another one. But I somehow knew those roles had potential to define me, and I didn't want that. I didn't want to be labeled as Superman for the rest of my career. I was maybe 22, but I saw the danger.”

Dr. Who’s former companion Rose, A.K.A. Billie Piper is along for the ride. Recently Piper poped by up in the Dr. Whoverse, playing a different character. During a recent Awesome.con panel Billie Piper explained why she didn’t play Rose in the recent Doctor Who special as Doctor Who TV reports:

“I’ve heard a lot of that, [fans saying] ‘Why couldn’t you just be Rose and actually see [the Tenth Doctor] and be with him? I think to come back and do something slightly different was welcome for me because I’d come back so many times that even though I loved Rose I thought it probably needed a bit of a shift. And that’s what Steven Moffat wanted, he brought something very different. It’s good to watch it and wish that they could somehow connect in the way they used to instead of being totally satisfied. I really enjoyed playing it because I could be a bit mad and a bit strange...It was quite a confusing episode I thought. When I read the script I was like ‘what?!’ I got it in the end with the help of David though.”

She also expressed an interest in reprising her role for a possible Rose spin-off, adding:

That would be interesting… I’d be game!”

You can catch the premiere of Penny Dreadful tonight on Showtime as part of the networks free weekend preview.
