David Petraeus announced on Friday that he will be stepping down as head of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) due to an affair he had with his biographer Paula Broadwell.
According to the Chicago Tribune harassing emails from Paula Broadwell to another woman got the attention of the FBI who discovered the affair.
Petraeus admitted to the extra martial affair on Friday and an official said that the FBI were tracking the scandal for several months between the two.
The FBI said that a complaint was launched against Broadwell and an Army reserve officer. TheyI contacted the CIA man directly about the affair prompting the military man to quit.
Petraeus who has been married to his wife Holly Petraeus for 38 years handed in his resignation to President Obama, a decision that has left Members of Congress asking for details of the affair that led to Patraeus' calling it time on his military career.
Steve Boylan a spokesman for Patraeus told media. "He is truly remorseful about everything that's happened." He later added that Patraeus felt sorry for the damaged he caused his "wonderful family."
He went on to say. "He screwed up, he knows he screwed up, now he's got to try to get past this with his family and heal."
The CIA had concerns with the Patraeus and Broadwell's relationship according to the Chicago Tribune.The biographer would get to accompany the military man on morning runs and had access to spy agency headquarters in Langley, Va., to meet him in his office.
Broadwell also was seen shadowing Patraeus while he was on duty in Afghanistan.
