FX new TV series, the dark comedy/crime drama inspired by the 90's Coen Brothers film of the same name, Fargo, is a hit among critics and audiences alike. But Martin Freeman, better known as Bilbo Baggins of Hobbit fame, claims he always knew he had some dark characters trapped within himself; he has literally been begging studios to let him be a rapist for years. Billy Bob Thornton is always ready to shine in the role of the eccentric stranger, just as long as the set isn't to aged. Monty Python director Terry Gilliam claims that Thornton quit his movie The Zero Theorem back in 2009, because Billy Bob is afraid of old things. The film was scheduled to be shot in London, and apparently everything about the ancient Roman metropolis scares the hell out of him.
Martin Freeman really standouts in his new Fargo role as enigmatic wife killer Lester Nygaard, but then again he always knew he would.
Martin enjoys the opportunity to be Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson's Hobbit franchise, though Freeman still longed to show the world some of the dark and more twisted stuff that he is capable of bringing to his performances.
In an in-depth interview with TVGuide, Bilbo used some uncharacteristic language to express his frustration and desire to tackle seedier roles, like he used to play back in the day in England before he was famous:
"I just loved it. I've said to my agents for ages in a kind of lighthearted way that I think I need to play a serial killer, a f---ing rapist, drug dealer, whatever. Partly because people don't see me like that and partly because I want to flex those muscles again.
"Before The Office, I was a young actor in London who casting agents... saw as kind of edgy. I would be going up for those parts that were a bit violent or a bit scuzzy.
"It's not that I'm a serial killer or anything.
"But it's in everybody. We all have those moments where you do want to throw someone out of a window."
Speaking of dreary ole England, Billy Bob Thornton is apparently scared to death of the place.
During a discussion on the Empire podcast Monty Python legend Terry Gilliam claimed that Billy Bob Thornton quit his latest film The Zero Theorem because he has a crippling fear of old objects.
According to American Terry, Billy Bob, who was later replaced by Chistoph Waltz, just couldn't keep it together around the funny looking cabs and faded wall-papered pubs (via Indiewire):
"I'm astonished, I just don't get it...These are the things you learn when you start casting people you admire-that they're more complicated."
Watch actor Billy Bob Thornton and Matrin Freeman pretend to be weird in Fargo every Tuesday night at 10 pm on FX.
