Paul Simon and his much younger, yet middle-age, wife Eddie Brickell were bound and headed for jail not Graceland last month after being arrested following an argument that appeared to turn violent. Police claim that both parties were acting "physically aggressive" that evening, but the musicians seemed the perfect pair when they appeared in court April 28. Their marriage isn't usually prone to such outrageous altercations, so Paul and Eddie have no plans to divorce in the future. They told the judge they posed no threat to each other, and had a family outing planned with their son for later that afternoon.
Paul Simon and Edie Brickel seemed far less full of themselves in court last week, than they did the night of their reported arrest.
New Canaan, Connicut chief of police Leon Krolikowski told the Associated Press that it was quickly determined by officers responding to the "family dispute" that Edie and Simon had both clearly assaulted one another before their arrival (via Washington Post):
"There was aggressiveness on both sides...They're both victims and they have children involved and we're trying to be very cautious of that."
Paul explained to the Judge William Wenzel that he and Edie don't have any issues with abuse, and their family is still very much together following this singular isolated incident (via NY Daily News):
"We had an argument, which is atypical of us. Neither of us has any fear, or any reason to be threatened."
"We're going to go home and watch our son play baseball."
Edie took the brunt of the blame for the altercation via a statement from her attorney that was released to CNN:
"I got my feelings hurt and I picked a fight with my husband...The police called it disorderly.
"Thank God it's orderly now."
Their lawyer Allan Cramer explained that Edie's old mother got scared and called the cops on what otherwise was a fairly uneventful argument (via NY Daily News):
"It was a normal husband-and-wife discussion...Paul didn't want to discuss it and she did. He tried to leave and she kind of locked the door."
Edie is lucky Garfunkel wasn't there, because everybody knows the Art don't play--ever.
