Chicago Symphony Orchestra's Riccardo Muti Receives Vittorio De Sica Prize

Gustavo Dudamel was honored by a classical music website where it was announced that he was heir artist of the year due to his performances. An equally impressive conductor has picked up another massive prize.

Italian maestro Riccardo Muti the principal conductor for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra has scooped up the a 2012 Vittorio De Sica Prize.

This announcement was made on Nov. 6 via the orchestra's website and the following press release reads.

"The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association, its Board of Trustees, and President Deborah Rutter are pleased to extend their most heartfelt congratulations to CSO Music Director Riccardo Muti today, having been named one of the recipients of the 2012 Vittoria De Sica prize, in honor of his contributions to music.

This honor was extended to Maestro Muti earlier today in Rome in a formal ceremony at the Quirinale Palace. The De Sica prizes, named after Academy Award winning Italian film director and actor Vittorio De Sica, are given annually by the Academy of Italian Cinema to those who have made extraordinary contributions to the arts, culture, science and society. Italian President Giorgio Napolitano personally announced these awards and distributed the prize medals by sculptor Pericle Fazzini to each recipient.

Since 1975, when the first awards were given, recipients of the De Sica prize have included actors , directors, producers, critics, photographers, composers, musicians, architects, artists, poets and writers."

Muti who hails from Naples, Italy has been honored by the Royal Academy of Music in 1981 and was made an honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) in 2000. Other awards include a Birgit Nilsson Prize in 2011 and Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts in the same year. These are few of the notable awards the CSO conductor has won.
